Well the New Year has arrived and everything's back in full swing. It’s great to hear that everyone enjoyed our Christmas club night and for those who went to Semaphore RSL for New Years Eve we’re assured they had a ball. It’s short and sweet this month, as there’s not too much to report after the break.

It is with great sympathy that we offer our condolences to families of Ollie, from the BBB band, who wonderfully took on the role of the middle Andrew’s sister at our GI Jive Ball, and Tiger who was known for his love of dancing and colourful outfits, often seen twirling the ladies with the greatest of ease. These two fine gentlemen will be greatly missed throughout the dancing scene.

Club Nights – Due to the lack of attendance to a standard club night, we have had to combine our club night with the Adelaide Rock’n’roll club on the 1^st and 3^rd Tuesday of each month at the European Convention Centre. This will mean the there WILL be swing played, the more swing people who attend the more swing will be played. This is our chance to strut our stuff and prove that swing can be done to an array of music. We still be be holding workshops as often as possible, hopefully every two to three months.

What is Swing Dancing ?

Swing dancing, otherwise known as the Lindy Hop, originated in the late 1930's in the ballrooms of Harlem, New York. A culmination of the 1920's Charleston, traditional Ballroom and Jazz moves, the Lindy Hop is a fun, energetic and sometimes acrobatic dance that can be done with or without a partner. Unlike Ballroom or Latin, Lindy Hop thrives on improvisation, it's loose, free and exhilarating! Having undergone an international revival in the 1990's, Swing has surpassed its prewar popularity, becoming the No 1 social dance in America. Swing Dancing is fast becoming as popular in Australia. Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney now boast hundreds caught up in the music, dancing and culture of Swing ! And it's not the older generation who are leading this revival. The youth of today are the driving force behind the revival of this dynamic dance style ! Interested ? You don't need to be an expert dancer, you just have to love the music. This easy-to-learn dance style is fun, 100% social, and a great way to keep fit and meet new people.

SWING ... It's more than just a dance, it's a culture, steeped in innovation, nostalgia and most importantly ... music !

SWINGSHIFT is a sub-committee of the Adelaide Rock'N'Roll Club, set up to promote swing dancing and music in Adelaide. With swing clubs and organizations blooming across the world, Adelaide is now starting to see the beginnings of our swing revival ! The aim is to nurture a vibrant 'Swing Scene', creating opportunities for dancers, teachers and musicians.

SWINGSHIFT will be catering events to suit those interested in swing music and dance styles, plus providing South Australians with a central source of information with emailed Updates.

If you're interested in becoming a member of SWINGSHIFT, simply contact us. Membership is $25 for 1 year. Members are entitled to discounts at SWINGSHIFT and Adelaide Rock'N'Roll Club club nights and events.

Swing Events

SWINGSHIFT will be hosting events during the year, ranging from special theme 'Swing Balls' to contemporary 'Swing Raves' at local venues and clubs. Some great events during 2003 started with the Official Launch Night on April 5 which was a sellout, followed by A Swing Thing 21st June, Swing Into Spring 4th October and G I Jive 31st January 2004 and our 1st Anniversary Ball on 23rd April this year have all been very successful fun nights. Join the email list to keep up to date with details of coming dance events. To further promote swing dancing in Adelaide, demonstrations are organised throughout the year in public places, like parklands and malls. If you wish to be involved, just let us know !
